Short answer: plan on a ceiling of at least 10 feet for a golf simulator if you want to swing a driver freely. Many golfers can make 9 feet work, especially if they’re under about 6 feet tall or have a flatter swing. At 8 feet, most people are limited to irons, wedges and putting. The only way to know for sure is to take your driver into the room and swing it.

Below: what the major brands recommend, what changes the number for you, how to test your room, and what to do if your ceiling is low. You can also check your full room in our golf simulator room size calculator.

What changes the ceiling height you need

How to test your ceiling in five minutes

  1. Find where you’ll stand. Put a towel down where the hitting mat will go.
  2. Measure to the lowest point directly above your swing, including any beam, light or door track.
  3. Take slow swings with your driver, then gradually speed up. Watch the top of the backswing and the follow-through.
  4. Leave a few inches of clearance at full speed. If you brush the ceiling slowly, you’ll hit it at full speed.
  5. Try an iron too. Even if the driver doesn’t fit, irons and wedges may.

Ceiling height for overhead launch monitors

Ceiling-mounted launch monitors, like Uneekor’s overhead units, the Foresight Falcon and the Trackman iO, need enough height to mount above your swing. Retailer and manufacturer guides generally put that at roughly 9.5โ€“10.5 feet, depending on the model. If your ceiling is lower, choose a floor unit instead.

FAQ

Is an 8-foot ceiling enough for a golf simulator?

For full driver swings, usually not. For irons, wedges and putting, often yes, especially for shorter golfers or flatter swings.

Is a 9-foot ceiling enough for a golf simulator?

For many golfers, yes. SkyTrak notes that many golfers find 9 feet enough, though taller golfers and upright swings may need 10 feet. Test it with your driver before you buy.

What is the ideal ceiling height for a golf simulator?

Ten feet or more. That gives nearly every golfer room for a full driver swing and leaves space to mount a projector or overhead launch monitor.

How much room do I need overall?

About 10 feet of ceiling, 15 feet of width and 18 feet of depth is comfortable. See how much space you need for a golf simulator for the full breakdown.
